It’s a New Decade! Could it Be Time for a New Air Conditioner?

It’s hard to say goodbye to the old. Especially when the “old” is your home or office HVAC unit. No one wants to have to buy a new air conditioner. The fact is they do have a lifespan and will eventually reach the end of the road where they will either quit working entirely or become so energy-inefficient that your bill skyrockets rendering them non-cost-effective.

The average air conditioning unit is made to last 10 to 15 years depending on if you service it regularly and change out the filter as well as how often it operates. One that runs all day year-round will tend to get to the 10-year mark vs one in a northern state where it is not needed in the winter and fall months which may make it to the 15-year maximum.

We wanted to give you a bit of clarity and give you some professional tips to look for to be able to tell if your AC may need to be replaced sooner than later.

5 signs it’s time to replace your air conditioner

  1. AGE: As we mentioned above, if your air conditioner is more than 10 years old be aware that it may start losing efficiency and may stop working within the next few years. If you are at that mark it is wise to start an HVAC fund.

2. INEFFICIENCY: If your air conditioner is older or has a low SEER rating, it can cost you more on your electric bill to operate it. If your unit’s SEER rating is below 13, a newer model will save you big time on your FPL bill.

3. REPAIR OR REPLACE? If you are having issues and you’re facing expensive repairs. You will want to weigh the repair costs against the costs of a new unit. If the repair would cover a large chunk of change towards a new system, it may very well make more financial sense to replace it.

4. R22 FREON USE. Freon is being phased out by the federal government in order to save energy nationwide. Because of this, the costs of Freon are rising. If your air conditioner does use Freon, you will eventually have to replace it eventually in order to switch over to the new refrigerant (R410A). If you need to replace freon often or are having other freon related issues you may be better off replacing it with a newer model.

5. INCONSISTENT TEMPERATURES. If you have a hard time keeping your home cool, it can be a sign of an aging air conditioner (or an incorrectly sized unit). Either way, it needs to be looked at and possibly replaced.
