What is your AC trying to tell you? How to intemperate noises

Living in Florida your air conditioner works hard on a daily basis. There is no air conditioner offseason. Winter generally comes and goes pretty quickly allowing us to shut down our systems and pop open the windows for only a few days or weeks if we are lucky.

This constant use puts a strain on the units themselves over time. If your AC starts making noises, it can be worrisome. Here is how to tell what those noises are trying to tell you.

Grinding Noises

Hearing a grinding noise coming from your cooling system is alarming. It almost definitely means it is having trouble with the air handler. The air handler is the component that circulates air in your home. The motor holds lubricated bearings which allow it to run smoothly. Over time lubrication can be lost and friction from air movement can begin to wear on the handler and the bearings.

If grinding is heard call for service as soon as possible. The bearings need to be replaced or it can fail and wear out the motor itself.

Short Cycling

If your AC unit is turning itself on and off every few minutes this is called short cycling. It drastically limits the ability to circulate the cooled air and over a long period of time if this is allowed to continue other parts of the system may start to fail due to overexertion. Short cycling can shorten the lifespan of your unit.

Bubbling and Hissing Sounds

That hissing sound is a sign of a leak in your refrigerant. A leak can deplete the system which causes a steady decline in cooling ability. Eventually, when there is not enough refrigerant left, the system will inevitably break down.

All of these noises are your system’s call for help. Ignoring it will lead to more expensive repair or replacement down the road. Don’t wait. If you are in the SW Florida area, give All Day Air Cooling and Heating a call today (239) 357-0727 or visit www.alldayaircooling.com to learn more.
